I carry a deep concern about the rise of authoritarianism in our country. For me, it's personal. Politics has never been abstract.
My mother, a Cuban national, met my father, a U.S. Naval pilot, while he was stationed at Guantanamo Bay. (Yes, that Gitmo Bay.) They married just one year before the United States severed diplomatic ties with Cuba. Castro had come to power promising liberation from Batista’s dictatorship, but by January 1959, the gate between the base and the rest of Cuba was literally shut. American personnel were cut off from Cuban nationals. My mother wouldn’t see her parents again for 18 years.
Castro, once hailed as a liberator, had revealed himself to be something else entirely: charismatic, yes—but also deceptive, authoritarian, and deeply corrupt. He stripped the Cuban people of their freedom, their livelihoods, and their democracy.
Sound familiar?
Here’s the truth: Castro and today’s Republican Party might not share political ideologies, but they do share something dangerous: corruption.
For many younger Americans, and even those who’ve lived comfortably under the protections of our constitutional republic, the warning signs of authoritarianism can feel distant or abstract. For me, politics has never been abstract.
Why I Started Indivisible SpicewoodI started this chapter of Indivisible for one reason: to do something to vote Trump and his cronies out of office. History shows us that failed governments are almost always driven by men obsessed with power, and this administration is no exception. They’ve made it clear they have no respect for Congress, and disturbingly, the current Congress is letting it happen. This is corruption. Plain and simple. Corruption and unchecked abuse. We must stop it. And our chance is the midterms.Losing is not an option.
Here’s what the data tells us:
According to the Wall Street Journal, 63% of voters had an unfavorable view of the Democratic Party. But after the election, 46% said they’d vote Democrat for Congress in 2026, compared to 43% who would vote Republican.
➤ That 11% of missing voters is our opportunity.
•The polls tell us that 63% say Democrats are disconnected from everyday concerns.
➤ What if we showed them that their most profound concern is freedom itself?
•What is being said is that Republicans are trusted more on the economy, immigration, and crime.
➤ But Trump has lied about these issues—so we need to talk to our neighbors and share the truth!
•32% of registered voters are third-party voters.
➤ This is the offense in our game.
Let’s Get Strategic
We can’t afford to wing it.
Even our conversations need to be intentional.
That’s why I’m inviting you to a strategic planning session. Our team leads will be trained in listening and speaking skills that we will bring to you. We will bring that to you, and then we ask that you come with us to take it to our community.
Let’s turn concern into clarity. Let’s turn clarity into action.
➤Amplify Connection: Listening Skills for Outreach Coming in January!!! These will be key to our outreach strategy in 2026.We’ll dive deeper into this at our December general meeting—don’t miss it.Please let me know if you are interested in the training session
